California Gold Rush

James_w_marshall

The man who discovered gold at Sutter's Mill and started the 1849 California Gold Rush, died penniless.  Brother James W. Marshall found a nugget of gold while overseeing construction at the mill.  The discovery brought thousands to the area in search of quick riches.  The newcomers seized Marshall's property and divided it, leaving him in poverty.  A bronze statue marks the spot where he discovered the gold. His Lodge is unknown, but he was a member of Sonora Chapter 2, RAM, Sonora, California.
