Allen B. Wilson, Harmony Lodge 42, Waterbury, CT, was a cabinet maker by trade, who in 1850 submitted a patent to improve the primitive sewing machine Elias Howe had invented 4 years earlier. Considered the first practical sewing machine, Wilson's adaptation enabled him to establish Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing, which produced its award winning and enormously popular machines. Unbelievably, Brother Wilson designed this amazing product without ever having seen a sewing machine.
